Glucose Goddess Launches New Supplement, But Is It Snake Oil?

Jessie Inchauspe AKA the Glucose Goddess has gained quite a following online. Racking up a huge 3 million Instagram followers and a bestselling book under her belt, she has recently made headlines with the launch of her new supplement called Anti-Spike.

The thing is, that a lot of people are calling it out as snake oil, and there’s a relatively good reason why. She claims that Anti Spike will people to indulge in their favorite high-carb and high-sugar foods without the usual blood sugar spikes that can lead to weight gain.

But, fundamentally that’s not how it works, and whilst some of the ingredients like cinnamon have been shown to help diabetics lower blood sugar levels, it was also shown to do absolutely nothing to the blood sugar levels of people without the condition. Not to mention the fact that blood sugar spikes are not what “cause” weight gain.

As a result many experts, Center TRT’s Dr Watson included, have raised concerns about the effectiveness and safety of this product. So let’s get onto the controversy surrounding the Glucose Goddess' $65 supplement and explore the facts and fiction behind its claims.

The Problem with Blood Sugar Spikes

When we consume carbohydrates and sugars, our body breaks them down into glucose, which is then transported through the bloodstream.

However, large fluctuations in blood sugar levels can have negative effects on our health.

Rapid drops in blood sugar can lead to cravings for sweet foods that deliver glucose to our bodies quickly. This is the supposed link to overeating and weight gain.

And of course consistently high blood sugar levels can contribute to chronic conditions such as diabetes.

The Promise of Anti-Spike

According to the Glucose Goddess the Anti-Spike supplement is the ultimate solution to prevent blood sugar spikes caused by consuming carb- and sugar-heavy foods.

Priced at $65 per bottle of 60 capsules, the supplement contains a blend of herbal ingredients, including white mulberry leaf, lemon extract, vegetable antioxidants, and cinnamon.

The Glucose Goddess claims that this specific combination of ingredients can reduce the blood sugar spike of carbs and sugar by up to 40 percent.

Expert Warnings and Criticisms

Despite the Glucose Goddess' claims, experts have expressed their concerns about the effectiveness and safety of Anti-Spike.

Firstly we have our own Dr Mark Watson MD, stating, that “this is a fundamental misunderstanding of blood sugar spikes and weight gain before we get started. Promising that you can eat high calorie foods and then prevent blood sugar spikes isn’t how these ingredients work at all in trials. Secondly the blood sugar spikes themselves don’t cause weight gain, calories do. Cinamon doesn’t affect none diabetics blood sugar as we can see in the trials, and it also doesn’t prevent spikes as the trials have been done on fasting blood sugar levels. Lastly we have the fact that if you’re craving something sweet the best option is to find a lower calorie alternative to begin with, rather than following it with a pill that is 99% likely ineffective beyond the placebo effect”.

He continued, “People have questioned the validity of some of the studies that back it up, small sample sizes on some of the ingredients etc, but honestly, it needs reiterating, that’s just not even how some of them are supposed to work.”

Dr. Idrees Mughal echoed the sentiment when interviewed by the UK daily mail and warns that relying solely on a pill to counteract the effects of unhealthy foods is dangerous. He emphasizes that the supplement does not make the cake or any other high-calorie food more nutritious. It's still just cake.

Then we have Dr. Colleen Tewksbury the professor of nutrition at Pennsylvania college of nursing "Your endocrine system is well-equipped to regulate blood glucose. If you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and have elevated blood sugars, some research suggests regular supplementation of cinnamon could help lower blood sugars," she said, echoing the sentiments of our Dr Watson.

The Ingredients and Their Potential Effects

Let's take a closer look at the ingredients in the Anti-Spike supplement and their potential effects on blood sugar levels.

White Mulberry Leaf: This herbal ingredient has been studied for its potential to regulate blood sugar levels. Some research suggests that it may help reduce blood sugar spikes and improve insulin sensitivity.

Lemon Extract: Lemon extract is known for its antioxidant properties. There is almost no research specifically on its effects on blood sugar. There is some to suggest antioxidants can improve blood sugar regulation however.

Vegetable Antioxidants: The supplement also contains a blend of vegetable antioxidants. These antioxidants, derived from various vegetables, may have positive effects on blood sugar control and overall health.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon has been a popular natural remedy for blood sugar management. And whilst studies suggest that cinnamon may help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity it’s only been shown to be effective on diabetics.

It is important to note that while individual studies have shown promising results for some of these ingredients, the combination of all the ingredients in Anti-Spike has not been extensively studied.

The Role of Diet and Exercise

Experts emphasize that relying solely on a supplement like Anti-Spike is not a comprehensive solution. A balanced diet and regular exercise play crucial roles in maintaining overall health and managing blood sugar levels.

Focusing on a more moderate glucose spike or following a diet that minimizes large spikes can help achieve a more normalized insulin response. Incorporating whole foods, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates can provide a steady source of energy without causing extreme blood sugar fluctuations.

Exercise, particularly aerobic and resistance training, can also help regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity and promoting weight management. A combination of a healthy diet and regular physical activity is essential for long-term health and blood sugar control.
