Several studies have examined the effects of Shilajit on testosterone levels. And as a result a lot of fuss has been caused as to whether or not Shilahit can raise testosterone.
And whilst there’s some possibility that Shilajit could raise testosterone as it stands the research is a little bit shaky.
And its also worth noting a lot of the studies have been conducted on specific branded mixtures of Shilajit, which may not be representative of all Shilajit products. But, the successful studies do use specific extracts not just any old Shilajit.
The Study Everyone Talks About
There has been one randomized double blind placebo controlled trial on Shilajit and testosterone. The researchers evaluated the effect of purified Shilajit on testosterone levels in healthy volunteers aged between 45 and 55 years. These participants were then given 250 mg of Shilajit extract twice a day for 90 consecutive days.
The results of the study showed that there was a notable increase in total testosterone, free testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) levels in the group treated with Shilajit compared to the placebo group.
How Does Shilafit Work?
There hasn’t been any conclusion as to how exactly Shilajit effects testosterone levels. However, the current working theory is that the fulvic acid present in Shilajit is the main reason. Fulvic acid has been shown to enhance the transportation of nutrients into cells, including those involved in testosterone production. Therefore it stands to reason this is what is causing the effect.
There is also a theory that Shilajit may stimulate the production of testosterone by promoting the activity of enzymes involved in its synthesis although this is a little less well backed.
Safety and Purity: The Concerns
Another aspect to consider when evaluating Shilajit is its safety and purity. Unlike standardized supplements, Shilajit is not often tested or regulated and due to its natural variability this is an issue. This lack of standardization raises concerns about its potential risks and side effects.
In fact, some countries have issued warnings about Shilajit, highlighting the need for caution even when it remains legal.
The Verdict: Shilajit as a Testosterone Booster
Considering the challenges with consistency, limited research, and the availability of safer alternatives, it's difficult to conclude that Shilajit is a reliable testosterone booster.
