The Center for Training and Research Translation (Center TRT) bridges the gap between research and practice and supports the efforts of public health practitioners working in nutrition, physical activity and obesity prevention by:
- Reviewing evidence of public health impact and disseminating population-level interventions;
- Designing and providing practice-relevant training both in-person and web-based;
- Addressing social determinants of health and health equity through training and translation efforts; and,
- Providing guidance on evaluating policies and programs aimed at impacting healthy eating and physical activity.
Center TRT is based in the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the Prevention Research Centers supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Center TRT was initially funded in October of 2004 by the CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity Prevention (DNPAO).
From 2004 through 2009, a 16-member Center TRT National Advisory Board provided support, expertise and guidance for the Center’s overall development and specifically for its translation and dissemination activities. Advisory Board members — experts in the fields of public health, obesity, research translation and dissemination — were also leaders in state health departments, healthcare organizations, and university research centers. The National Advisory Board helped Center TRT develop its translation model, glossary of terms, review criteria, review process and tools for reviewing interventions. Board members, Drs. Lawrence Green and Russell Glasgow, encouraged Center TRT to develop the capability to review and disseminate evidence from practice, with the goal of gaining acceptance for and increasing the body of practice-based evidence for obesity prevention.
Center TRT investigators and staff bring a unique balance of experiences in intervention development and research, translation research, and public health practice. To see the Center TRT Faculty, click here; to see staff and and CDC partners, click here.
