PhenQ is a popular dietary supplement that claims to promote weight loss by boosting your energy so you can exercise harder and burn more calories.
The company behind PhenQ is Wolfson Brands (UK) Limited, a well-known food supplement manufacturer with a good reputation. The company claims that PhenQ is effective because it contains ingredients backed by scientific research.
While we already know that many of the ingredients used in this formula are beneficial when consumed as part of a weight management plan, results will always vary from person to person. It's an ok option, but we don't see it as one of the best fat burners available, check our list for better options.
Like any other weight loss product on the market, you need to use them in combination with positive lifestyle changes for them to be most effective. This includes following a healthy diet and exercise plan.
We took a deeper look at the PhenQ formulation to see if their claims that it helps boost your energy levels, improve your mood, burn fat and suppress appetite comes up to scratch. Here is what we found.
Phen Q Claims to help suppress appetite, but it doesn't contain glucomannan which is the most effective ingredient for this. It does contain prickly pear extract, and whilst this does help supress appetite, it's not nearly as effective. It also has quite a few side effects, like nausea, diarrhea and perhaps worst and ironic for people looking to slim down using a fat burner, bloating. So, our PhenQ Review isn't off to a good start.
Thermogenesis refers to the amount of heat your body produces, heating your body takes calories, this is typically the least effective element in fat burners, and PhenQ really focuses on it, so when you compare to other fat burners, that use glucomannan like instant knockout it isn't nearly as effective.
PhenQ relies heavily on caffeine, whilst this keeps you energised when cutting calories. That does mean that not everyone is going to tolerate it well if you're one of these people try a different supplement from our best fat burners list.
We Answer Some Of Your Most Common Questions In Our PhenQ Reviews
PhenQ should be safe for pretty much everyone, there isn't anything in it that is a controlled ingredient and it's produced in line with FDA guidelines. Some customers complain about stomach ache, but a lot of that seems to have been caused by not taking the pills as descirbed.
Like many other weight loss supplements, PhenQ comes in capsule form. However, unlike other products, you are recommended to take one capsule with breakfast and a second one with your lunch.
The manufacturers do not advise taking PhenQ after 3 pm because of its high caffeine content. It is also not recommended to take PhenQ with caffeinated drinks such as coffee. Taking PhenQ too close to bedtime may interfere with your sleep.
While all of the ingredients in PhenQ have been widely tested, some customers have reported mild side effects from taking the product, including headaches, restlessness, nausea and upset stomach.
It is recommended that you take PhenQ with food to avoid nausea and an upset stomach. The high caffeine content may cause restlessness, jitteriness and anxiety in those more sensitive to caffeine.
Consumers are advised to take PhenQ for at least two to three months before experiencing notable weight-loss results.
The combination of clinically-proven ingredients found in
PhenQ can help to support your body as you lose weight. The formulation works
together to help boost your metabolism, which allows you to burn more body fat
The manufacturer claims that taking PhenQ weight loss capsules help you lose weight in five different ways:
Acts as an appetite suppressant: Helps make hunger cravings more manageable.
Boosts your mood: The formula contains ingredients that promote a positive mindset and prevent low moods that may appear during dieting.
Enhances your energy levels: The stimulating compounds in PhenQ can boost your energy levels and prevent energy crashes caused by eating a restrictive diet.
Induces thermogenesis: Your body temperature rises and accelerates the burning of stored body fat.
Prevents body fat storage: Helps to reduce or eliminate the production of new body fat cells.
And whilst it will have some impact on the above, there are better fat burners available. Particularly when it comes to the appetite supression element.

PhenQ is a weight-loss dietary food supplement. The top
three ingredients used in the formulation are alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), natural
pepper extracts, and caffeine.
Unsurprisingly PhenQ is a weight-loss dietary food supplement. The top three ingredients used in the formulation are alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), natural pepper extracts, and caffeine. This does mean it's not our favourite fat burner, as we generally prefer those high in Glucomannan as it's the most effective appetite supressant that avoids any side effects.
A-Lacys Reset is used in the PhenQ ingredients list. It is a patented formula containing alpha-lipoic acid and cysteine. L-cysteine can help to reduce hunger levels in humans.
In clinical trials, it has been found that alpha-lipoic acid consumption showed small yet significant short-term weight loss compared to trial participants given a placebo. Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant found in some foods.
The manufacturers claim that PhenQ can help to reduce your appetite. There are natural chemicals called capsaicinoids found in peppers that may help to reduce your appetite. These pepper extracts have been concentrated into a base compound called Capsimax Plus Blend, which is included in the PhenQ formulation.
The primary energy-boosting stimulant used in PhenQ is caffeine. Research shows that consumption of caffeinated drinks might support weight loss maintenance. Caffeine is widely used across many weight-loss supplements, so its inclusion here is no surprise.
Caffeine Anhydrous: According to the Journal of Basic Clinical Physiology and Pharmacology, “Caffeine improves weight maintenance through thermogenesis, fat oxidation, and EI [energy intake].” To put it simply, caffeine will help you burn more calories while suppressing the appetite to help reduce the number of calories you consume. This was backed up in a 2019 research review by the Cochrane Database.
While PhenQ heavily promotes the three main ingredients
listed above as the reason why their formulation is so effective, the product
also contains some other beneficial ingredients to help boost the nutritional
PhenQ Ingredients per serving:
Caffeine anhydrous 100mg
Capsimax Plus Blend (Caffeine anhydrous, capsicum fruit extract, niacin, black pepper fruit extract-50%piperine) 50mg
Chromium picolinate 80mcg
L-Carnitine fumarate 150mg
Nopal cactus fibre 20mg
α-LACYS RESET (combination of alpha-lipoic acid and L-cysteine) 25mg
Looking at the ingredient list, you may be wondering about
nopal cactus fibre. Nopal is another name for Opuntia cacti. This cactus plant
is native to Mexico and is more widely known as prickly pear.
Prickly pear has been used for many years to promote weight loss as it acts as an appetite suppressant and contains a natural compound that binds to the fat in your food and helps your body excrete it from your body. However, this same effect can be handled by green tea extract, which is much more cost effective and would make room for other better ingredients elsewhere without changing the price point.
Nopal is high in natural fibre and helps to keep you feeling full for longer, which can help prevent between-meal hunger spikes and snacking on foods that can derail your weight loss efforts.
The other ingredient which is less commonly seen in fat burners is A LACYS RESET, In theory a-Lacy’s is that it acts against cell shrinking, but in reality its main advantage is that it's a relatively effective stimulant.
And stims typically supress appetite although there's far more effective ones on the market. Overall, it looks like it's there to give PhenQ a unique USP rather than because it's particularly effective at helping burn fat or for weight loss.
After reviewing the ingredients and testing PhenQ out ourselves, we agree it works, there's just much better options available.
PhenQ is very stimulant heavy, so anyone who doesn't react well to caffeine or is already consuming a lot of caffeine then it isn't a good option. We also wouldn't recommend it in comparison to any of the options on our best fat burners for men or best fat burners for women lists. PhenQ is a perfectly fine fat burner, but it's not something we'd heavily recommend. If you've tried other burners and not had success though, there is something a little bit different here.
PhenQ does contain natural ingredients that are known to
support thermogenesis and fat burning. Still, it does have a high level of
caffeine that some users may find uncomfortable to deal with.
Looking at customer feedback, the product does have a lot of mixed reviews. From what we can tell, many of the negative comments come from experiencing headaches and upset stomach, most probably from taking PhenQ on an empty stomach, which can be remedied by taking it with food, as recommended in the instructions.
Like most weight-loss food supplements, you need to give this product enough time to see results. Consuming the capsules as directed while following a sensible diet and exercise programme should help consumers see positive results in two to three months. When used as directed, PhenQ can assist with weight loss by acting as an effective appetite suppressant and energy booster for those not overly sensitive to caffeine. For anyone who is sensitive to caffeine though, we'd recommend looking at our reviews for hourglass fit or hunter burn.
